Highway Hugs

Love and compassion are necessities, not luxuries. Without them humanity cannot survive.

how it all started

The idea of Highway Hugs came to me after a conversation in a sauna. I was on a 7-day detox retreat in Portugal, and sweating it out in the sauna was a regular part of the day. Fellow retreater Massimo and I were having one of those conversations about the state of humanity when he said simply, "if you are a man with a lot of food, and there is a starving man next to you, you should give him some of your food."

The message behind this one sentence became the foundation for Highway Hugs. It reminded me of how I tend to "put my blinders on" when I see someone standing by the side of the road. I want to help but a voice inside my head tells me that whatever money I give will be immediately wasted on drugs or alcohol.

I think we are way too quick to judge the homeless. We instantly think "drug addict" or "try getting a job", when in reality they're probably just going through a rough patch or suffer from a mental illness. Even if they are someone who could use an attitude adjustment, what's the harm in sharing some LOVE and helping them out?

So, Highway Hugs was born.

Highway Hugs gives uplifting care packages (Hugs) to those who really need them. I thought it would be helpful to create ready-made care packages that can be kept in the car, making it easy to give whenever coming across someone in need. Each Hug is filled with brand new, inspiring, and useful items to give the homeless a boost and a sense of being cared for.

Highway Hugs also gives the rest of us an opportunity to spread some compassion.
