Love and compassion are necessities, not luxuries. Without them humanity cannot survive.
- Dalai Lama
The idea of Highway Hugs came to me after a conversation in a sauna. I was on a 7-day detox retreat in Portugal, and sweating it out in the sauna was a regular part of the day. Fellow retreater Massimo and I were having one of those conversations about the state of humanity when he said simply, "if you are a man with a lot of food, and there is a starving man next to you, you should give him some of your food."
It was a simple statement, but one that stuck with me. This became the foundation of Highway Hugs. I realized that we often judge people too quickly. We might see a homeless man or woman and dismiss them, thinking, "Get a job!" I think this is the wrong approach. Chances are that person has a mental illness or is struggling in a way you can't even imagine. What's the harm in spreading some love?
So, I started brainstorming. What do people living on the street, or otherwise in need of help, really need?
I reached out to all different kinds of companies and donations have been coming in steadily.
Highway Hugs redistributes useful, high quality products to those in need.
Our goal is to get as many products as possible into the hands of those who would be unable to afford them otherwise.
If you would like to contribute / donate, please get in touch by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org.
A HUGE thank you to all the generous companies who have made donations so far!
